NYC DWI Lawyer Discusses Drug Recognition Experts
As an experienced NYC DWI Lawyer I am occasionally asked about drug recognition experts. I’ve received questions over the last several months from people who have been calling me about DUIs in Manhattan, and mostly involving non-alcohol related intoxication such as marijuana and other drugs. What comes up is what’s called a DRE, or Drug Recognition Expert. While the city of New York does employ them, they’re not as common as you may think. They’re very common in New Jersey, where I do a lot of cases. It’s essentially a special police officer, or a police officer with special training to analyze and examine a motorist to see whether or not, in their opinion, that person is under the influence of marijuana or some other substance such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, or some other like substance that’s otherwise illegal.
