New York DWI Lawyer Discusses What to do When Your Car is Impounded
As an experienced New York DWI Lawyer, I am often asked what one should do to get their car back after it has been impounded as a result of a DWI. If you are pulled over for a DWI and you were arrested in Manhattan for a DWI, your car will be impounded. And you probably don’t know how to get it back. I start the process on the first initial phone call. I try to find that out because it’s important to people. This is a practical problem that can be solved. If it’s vouchered or invoiced or impounded for safe keeping, you might be able to pick it up at the precinct the very next day. If it’s impounded or invoiced for forfeiture, then there’s a very specific process that we go through using the New York City Police Department Civil Enforcement Unit to get that car returned, usually in a settlement. There are specific rules that need to be followed to expedite the release of that motor vehicle.
